WASHINGTON — It’s that time of year when throngs of taxpayers are buckling down to file their income tax returns before Tuesday’s filing deadline. Many often pay to use software from private companies such as Intuit and H&R Block.
Good. The filing companies are for profit. They creat so called exclusions for just about everything so the filer doesn't get to file for free. They are charged.
It costs 57 dollars to file federal and state returns online AFTER applying a coupon code for a 50% discount on the federal return. That is RIDICULOUS. In Mexico you can file your taxes electronically for free.
Seems like ai could probably replace these programs.
I was hoping all the news regarding funding the IRS would've resulted in more VITA locations in places that needed it the most, but that's not what I saw this tax season. We desperately need to break the power of these greedy companies that prey on poor Americans.
I used Intuit's turbotax as usual. But, this year they charged me for things I said I didn't want and I couldn't undo it. It cost me almost $200 to use their service and my taxes couldn't be simpler. Even well known companies are crooks.

The US has an insane tax system. We have to figure out how much we owe, we have to pay someone to find out, and if that number is wrong, you’re punished!

I made less than their 73k limit for “free filing” still cost me $130 bucks to file. Turbo Tax.

Lord I hope so. IRS keeps moving lines around, & that dang GOP tax bill (aiming for post-card returns 🙄) doubled the number of forms I file. All I do is repeat the same number from form to form. Why shld I have to pay someone when IRS already has my data from companies?
AARP does taxes for free for Seniors. You must make an appointment, but they’re done on the spot. They do mine every year.
You’ll all have no idea what this really means and watching you is like watching fish out of water. THE IRS WANT YOU TO DO YOUR OWN TAXES SO YOU NEVER GET A REFUND AND ALWAYS HAVE TO PAY. Who do you think is gonna make the free program? THE IRS. YOU TRUST THEM? Ok. Enjoy then.

This is scary. There is so much scam in America where people use there social security number on document for everything. I think Radom people might get the info and fill in people taxes. You’d have to somehow get a code etc. hope it’s done properly.

I love the idea I really think taxes should not be so complicated that the common person should have to pay for software or accountants for assistance But I've also used government websites and it doesn't give me hope for the usability of free tax software by the government
