It’s that time of year when throngs of taxpayers are buckling down to file their income tax returns before Tuesday’s filing deadline. Many often pay to use software from private companies such as Intuit and HThere could be a new, free option in future years.
Robert Marvin, an IRS spokesperson, said in an email that a key goal of the study is to “look for ways to make filing taxes as easy as possible.” Derrick Plummer, a spokesman for Intuit, said taxpayers can already file their taxes for free and there are online free-file programs available to some people. Individuals of all income levels can submit their returns for free via the mail.
The provision that barred the IRS from exploring a free-file system expired in 2019, but the Free File Alliance agreement to provide free services for low-income taxpayers remains in effect. Rep. Jason Smith, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, sent a letter to the IRS in March questioning Jurow-Kleiman’s ability to be an independent reviewer, saying her work indicates “a clear preference for an expansive government-run system.”
Molly Martin, director of strategy at New America, referred requests for comment to the IRS, saying the organization “is still working on its report.”

I often wondered why I would have to go to a third party to E-File. I down load the PDF forms from The IRS, fill them out and then instead of being able to send them back. I have to print and send them my snail mail. They have to pay somebody to reenter into their computer.
It shouldn’t sit well with the public. Do you want the government doing your taxes?
I'm sick of big corps f-king over the people and making our lives harder just so they can make more money. If you're an employee, the gov already knows how much you owe or get back.. the only reason you have to fill out and file a big mess of paperwork is H&R Block and turbo tax
As cities across the country have cut down on arrests, prosecutions and incarcerations they are focusing on taking innocent citizens guns away. In Alabama, the people who were hurt were unarmed. We have the right to defend ourselves. Why do they not want us to do so.

I used to use file free at creditkarma (which had some limitations in adding schedules and states) - but then intuit bought it and started charging. I'll file by paper before I pay for the privilege of filing an uncomplicated tax return.
But that would put a bunch of people out of work.
It is outrageous we are forced to pay to file taxes. The IRS has the information and could easily process tax bills for every W2 employee in almost every case. But now you've made it impossible for us to do our own taxes without paying some middleman.

You should have to pay someone to file taxes. We should not even be doing this to begin with. The IRS is basically stealing people's money. Flat tax, no deductions everyone pays the same amount.

The people's representatives gave in to lobbyists (or were bought) so that we the people could PAY to compute the amount of tax we owe, and to keep the tax rules unnecessarily complex so that we HAD to pay to compute the tax we owe.
The IRS web site already has links to free tax preparation for anyone making under $60k. If you make over that you probably hire someone to do it. Most people making over $60 won't do it themselves
Canada has a free tax filing service on a government website. It's pretty good for most folks with basic tax needs. Extremely simple to use.
If they can't or they don't want to destroy the filer's, the filer fees should be deducted for everyone making under $100k. These companies are charging too much for simple forms.

The tax system is a bloated hub of corruption & waste, it should be completely overhauled, new legislation/guidelines should be half the size of a typical high school literature book, with max size allowed via restrained additions to be that of the full length literature book.
The IRS should go on skyautogpt in 2025. and humans, they should make insurance as the future. bike insurance, teeth insurance, fentanyl/420 insurance (use drugs and get paid into the system), unalive insurance etc. insurance is the future for the America.

What we need is a simplified tax code, a one-page flat tax where everyone pays the same equal percentage. Hundreds of billions, trillions saved in unnecessary bureaucracy. If only the government worked for the people and not for itself.

The IRS wants people to pay their taxes on time and correctly but they made the process such a shit show that third party companies built a business around it. The government needs our taxes. It's to their benefit to make that process as simple and painless as possible.
