With smart TVs already tops in streaming hardware, why the big players are eyeing a re-surge and jockeying to expand their OS market share

While the SVOD front of the streaming wars has been highly dramatic of late, battles are also heating up in the realm of streaming hardware.

Growth for smart TVs is expected to re-surge, however, with the start of a new upgrade cycle in the coming years. A noted that 25.5% of installed TVs in the U.S. are seven years or older as of February, the largest proportion since the final pre-COVID moments of Feb. 2020. Meanwhile, consumers’ usage of smart TVs has continued to grow. They accounted for fully a third of global streaming video-on-demand plays in 2022, according to NPAW data — more than the combined shares of all other devices, save smartphones.
