“We need companies like Teck here in Canada, companies with a strong commitment to Canada,” the letter reads. “The mining of critical minerals is key to the future and only companies that make serious commitments to ESG and strong partnerships with Indigenous peoples will succeed.”also without explanation, that Teck’s plans to open new B.C. mines won’t be honoured.
These are, it should be obvious, political arguments against Canadian business, not in defence of it. Foreign takeovers are not a threat to thriving domestic industries, especially when compared to how much this country is overtaxed, over-regulated and increasingly hostile to private investment of any kind.
Beyond vague appeals to nationalism, or environmentalism, opponents of the Teck takeover also employ straight up hypocrisy. They point to Glencore pleading guilty to corruptionlast year, for which it was fined US$1.1 billion , as evidence it is unfit to do business in Canada.
