Oregon Secretary of State Shemia Fagan has announced her resignation amid sharp criticism from both Republicans and Democrats for having moonlighted as a highly-paid consultant to a marijuana business

FILE - A marijuana harvester examines buds going through a trimming machine near Corvallis, Ore., on Sept. 30, 2016. Oregon Secretary of State Shemia Fagan announced her resignation on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, amid sharp criticism from both Republicans and Democrats for having moonlighted as a highly-paid consultant to a marijuana business.

Fagan's consulting job paid $10,000 per month, with bonuses three times that amount if she helped the company get licensed in other states. The secretary of state's salary is $77,000. Willamette Week had broken the news about Fagan's outside gig last week. Democratic leaders in the Legislature, where Fagan had served before being elected in 2020 to the state's second-highest office, issued a joint statement minutes after Fagan announced her resignation, saying she needed to go.

Fagan noted Monday that ethics guidelines allow outside employment. She said the consultancy didn’t represent a conflict of interest because any action taken as a result of the audit would be by the governor, Legislature or cannabis commission; and because a wide range of businesses would be affected by any regulation changes, not just her client.
