Derick Debevoise: How do you balance the need for competition and the need for compassion when leading a team or organization?I don’t believe that competition and compassion are on opposite sides of the scale. Both are able to coexist well with thoughtful integration and practices. Something I learned early as a dancer is that competing with the goal of beating or being better than another person is limiting to growth.
Overly focusing on competition can lead to an insecurity that distracts from meeting this obligation to customers. The best data source to know you’re providing value is the behavior of your customer, not a competitor.The few times earlier in my career that I felt pressured to be a more traditional, ‘competitive’ leader led to short-term wins that ultimately produce high-stress, low-value results.
