At the company’s Ruby Gala, Executive Artistic Director Lisa Mallette said the company needs to find a new home as its current space is slated for development.

City Lights Theater Company marked its 40th anniversary last Saturday with a Ruby Gala at the Holiday Inn in San Jose that lived up to the name — at least when it came to the red decor and attire. It was a night filled with tributes to longtime supporters and showstopping musical performances that had the crowd cheering.

“Theater takes a community to build a community,” she said, adding that theater changes people’s lives — both the performers and the audience members. “That’s why we’re looking for a new space. … We’re not going anywhere. We’re going to be here for another 40 years.” She’s said it’s been a very difficult search to find the right space to fit the needs of both the company and its audience. And while City Lights has been in downtown San Jose since it was founded — and at its current spot since 1991 — Mallette said she’s been looking beyond downtown, too.
