Company identifies 3 killed when Navy-contracted plane crashed during military exercises off San Diego coast

Three crew members on a Navy-contracted plane who died Wednesday in a crash off the San Diego coast were identified Friday by their employer.

Tatman was a captain, Geerlings was a first officer and Garner was a systems specialist. The company said it “grieves over this loss of our friends and fellow employees.”Phoenix Air said two of its Learjet aircraft were taking part in a Navy training exercise when one crashed about 7:40 a.m. Wednesday about a mile off San Clemente Island, about 80 miles off the coast of San Diego. The second plane landed safely.

The Coast Guard, along with Navy, Air Force and Customs and Border Protection units, scoured the crash site for more than a day before suspending its search after not finding survivors. The search covered a combined 334 square miles.
