There is concern the end may be nearing for the company in the town that bears its name.

WOOLRICH - The original Woolrich outlet store that two decades ago was attracting an estimated 400,000 people annually to the Clinton County town that bears the company name is closing.

“It’s really sad to see it go,” said Robert Maguire who purchased from Woolrich the warehouses and maintenance garage in which he has tenants. Like many others, Maguire believes this is the beginning of the end for the 197-year-old company locally.when the oldest continuously operating vertical mill in the United States shut down.

Woolrich, which John Rich founded in 1830 and touts itself as “The Original Outdoor Clothing Company,” has beenIt likely is best known for its red and black check found in wool and flannel shirts and other products. That pattern was introduced in 1850 in the buffalo shirt.It provided outfits for three of Admiral Richard Byrd’s expeditions to Antarctica and garments for movies including “City Slickers” and “The Horse Whisperer.” A premier showing of the latter took place in Lock Haven.
