Should be 13 to be on instagram. Parents have responsibility.

Thought rhese images was supposed to be banned it called playing on the vonurable bless x

It's the algorithm!!! Something need to be addressed here! Whoever controls it. They know what they're doing.

I guess there's worse addictions

Why did the parents think it was okay for a 12 year old to have access to social media accounts? How did the parents not notice their child was self harming so heavily for so long? Why cant the parents take some responsibility for their failings rather blame social media?

The issue is why we self harm. I can only speak for myself but to me it's a personal gratifaction/ punishment. The fact that people post SH on the Internet for comments seems like a call for help

I'm not at all pleased with the coverage. People self harm for many reasons. I'm a coping survivor of self harm for 15 years. I agree with my doctors when they agree 'self harm is better than a fatal alternative' (1/2)

It's up to parents to control what their children view. It's not the internet's fault your child is the way they are. It's not the internet's fault that kids have killed themselves. It starts at home.

Shoot me for being stupid but why don’t we give these poor kids some sort of painful but safe device that hurts but is not permanent...like a mini-stun gun. I know its not a solution but but maybe?

Not enough homework to do. Useless parents not monitoring activities.

You have to go looking for any content on the internet. I'm not sure a platform banning images (unless illegal) will stop people self-harming. It's a psychological condition that needs dealing with by professionals.

Seeing a lot of nastiness here. I thought it was exceptionally brave of that young woman and her family to talk about this. A very strong bond between daughter and parents.

Surely at 12yrs old the parents should have more control 😡

I wish this female all the very best, but this a psychological issue and nothing to do with the internet. God speed in your wellbeing.

That sounds like a psych issue, not a social media one.

Facebook has destroyed the world as we know it.

If you have been affected by the issues raised in this report, help and advice is available from BBC Action Line:

Mental health problems are to blame. Not social media.

Take a page out of tumblr's book and screen images with questionable content. One solution out of an issue which is much bigger unfortunately.

This isn’t only on social media sites but also gaming platforms.

Take her phone off of her. What shit parents.

instagram give zero f's about their service users. They wash their hands of any responsibility they have to young or vulnerable people. Standard answer from them. InstaShame

So sad to see these stories but good to see the awareness increasing - this content has to be taken down instagram bbcnews parentspact

They must be disturbed in the first place

Parents providing access to the internet, not monitoring their usage and ignoring the 13yr age limit then taking no responsibility for their children's mental health. Censorship is never the answer.

This is James talking about self harm and other aspects of his battle with mental health issues. It takes courage to open up in public. intro Part 2 Part 1

SwitchOff we need to get people to BoycottInstagram Instagram until someone does something about these images or agrees to talk

Well, I would not say that social media companies are innocent. They use armies of psychologists to get to young people, tracking every move, recommending content, etc. With the image and word recognition software the companies could remove the content automatically! socialmedia

She's mentally unwell, this platform nor any other platform is not at fault...

Probably talking about it at school by teachers never mind social media . Going home looking it up . Kids that young shouldn’t even no about it . We didn’t 25 years ago when that age . Something that seems to be a massive problem in society now . It’s pushed down kids faces.

This is a very important & incredibly complex matter. Social media was not the cause but it definitely contributed. Now I must ignore the commenters who personally judge the people & a situation they know nothing about

Not too bright some of these kids.

The thing is in the end she was still hurting herself

Wtf is wrong with people? Social media is not responsible for their daughter being hooked on these images. She obviously had a mental health problem. Why didn’t the parents be more involved in her life to prevent her use of social media? People are the problem

Government needs to act quick before more lives are lost its to easy to access for impressible kids

With the internet being 85% porn and 15% hate, pressure, bullying and self loathing, I’m beginning to wonder where children benefit from access to that. At the same time, I’m not quite sure what I’m suggesting.

If you banned Instagram they’d go to any number of other websites. Flawed argument.
