The chief design officer of Strava shares how she found the courage to speak up as a woman of color working in a male-dominated field

If you're an avid runner, like me, you may be familiar with the Strava app, which I live on when I'm training for a half marathon. The app tracks miles, routes, alerts me to potential races, and new running groups. It's a pretty good one-stop shop for most of my training needs.

Combining her background in advertising, marketing, creative, and product design, she's at the forefront of Strava's user experience. Butler is almost four months into her new gig. She comes from tech giants like Meta and Twitter. She's done facial-recognition work at Sephora, and believes in getting all people outside and moving. Chief design officer means different things from one company to another.

It's not that these other groups do not work out and are not interested in fitness, but we're focused on creating more equity and access to the sports and outdoors for those demographics. We have a commitment to promote and support women in movement in sport — to support that for Black and Latin athletes.

I think they really built on each other. One of the reasons I took that job at Sephora — outside of the fact that I love makeup — I was a loyal user, and it's always fun to work on a product that you like, or a company that you know as a customer. What they really wanted was a leader to come in and help figure out how to bridge the digital and in-store experience.

A big difference from going from Sephora to Facebook, was Sephora was largely women-led. When I went over to Facebook, it was much more of a bro culture and it was quite different in that respect. It made me think about how to bring equity into these larger tech companies. It's still male-heavy. I will say at my level, it's extremely diverse and it's one of the reasons I took the job. Our chief business officer is Zipporah Allen and she is a Black woman. Our VP of communications is Brian Bell; he's a Black man. There's me. Our CFO is a Taiwanese woman; our general counsel is Black woman. So we have a lot of diversity. One of our heads of engineering is a woman. So I love that aspect.

We had a goal for the end of April to identify someone and I moved that goal. I said we're going to do it at the end of May. It might take us longer but we need a more diverse list here. So sometimes you have to move a little slower, but I think it's worth it.
