Mauritania cut internet access this week amid demonstrations over the death of a man in police custodySome African countries have"broken their word" on a United Nations resolution on human rights on the internet, according to cyber security company Surfshark. "It's concerning that even though five African countries publicly supported the resolution, they still imposed internet restrictions. It's important to promote an open and accessible internet, and to pressure countries to uphold their commitments regarding human rights online," she said.

Sudan holds the second-highest number of restrictions since 2021. The first disruption occurred just three months after the resolution, coinciding with the country's military coup.Since then, Sudan has faced several wide-scale internet disruptions, with the most recent one recorded in April 2023, amid an ongoing armed conflict between the rival factions of military forces.

In November 2021, two 96-hour internet shutdowns from service providers due to political instability and the shooting of demonstrators by a French military convoy in Burkina Faso were the most notable cases of restrictions in West Africa.Burkina Faso, which banned Facebook in 2022, has had four restrictions since the 2021 resolution.

The restrictions follow demonstrations that were organised by activists to demand justice for a young man named Omar Diop, who recently passed away in a hospital shortly after being arrested for reportedly taking part in a scuffle.
