Methodology for the Chronicle 100 rankings and charts.

The Chronicle developed the criteria for the rankings, which reflect performance as reported by public companies to the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Chronicle reporter Katherine Feser handled surveys of Houston area private companies and law firms, and coordinated with other data providers on the homebuilders, communities and top auto models charts.Chronicle 100 scores The companies were ranked in each of the criteria, with each category given equal weight. The best possible score in each category is 1. To calculate the overall score, the four rankings were added and then divided by 4. The Chronicle 100 was derived from a list of 99 companies that met the criteria. The other public company charts are based on a set of 136 companies.
