Canada’s mermaid community has grown exponentially in recent years, with hundreds of enthusiasts putting on tails and living out their fantasies.

When Cassia Tofan tried on her first mermaid tail 11 years ago, she said it was like discovering another side of herself.

“Before, I used to be pretty insecure as a person, I had low self-esteem. I used to get bullied in school and stuff,” Tofan told the Star. “But I always loved to step into this fantasy world — it was kind of an escape for me.”Although she first put on the tail for herself, Tofan has since made “mermaiding” her career — performing at events and parties, posing for social media and creating music as her mermaid alter-ego, “Sia Shells.
