How many USAA members’ data is at risk?
About 19,000. Asked to specify the number, USAA said only that the breach affected less than 0.15 percent of its membership. It has previously said it has more than 13 million members, and 0.15 percent of that is 19,000.USAA did provide a specific number of Texas members affected: 2,726. That came from the company’s report to the Texas attorney general that was posted last week on the AG’s website.
“A limited number of employees at a third-party service supplier of USAA improperly shared their access credentials with unauthorized individuals,” he said. “This gave the unauthorized individuals access to personal information of a limited number of USAA members. We have begun notifying members impacted by this incident.”USAA has not identified the contractor. However, it said the third-party service provider immediately contacted USAA after becoming aware.
Over five months between Dec. 20 and May 18, according to a notice USAA provided to the California attorney general’s office. The third-party service provider said it is monitoring affected members’ accounts for any suspicious activity. USAA is offering those members two years of free credit monitoring provided by Experian.Though it’s required by law to notify members whose personal information was breached, USAA didn’t immediately say how or when it’s doing that.
