Gov. Josh Shapiro said in a Monday tweet that the state will assist with the rebuilding of the Broad Street Market.morning during a massive two-alarm fire. The fire was visible from the West Shore.
“Broad Street Market is one of the oldest continuously operating farmers’ markets in the country — a place where we come together to support local small businesses and our community,” Shapiro tweeted. “Last night’s fire that damaged the nearly 150 year old brick building is devastating.”“The Harrisburg community is strong — and we will rebuild. I’ve spoken to Mayor Williams and pledged to her that my Administration will be there to assist in any way we can,” he continued.
“Out of the ashes it’s going to be a more united market. While we are still hurting, we are excited about the future,” he said.Updates about the fire are expected to be announced this afternoon during a Harrisburg City press conference., it was founded in 1860. The stone building was completed in 1863 and the brick was built between 1874 and 1878. It claims to be the oldest continuously operated market house in the U.S.
