Many are wondering how the rebuilding will look and if a temporary location can be secured for vendors.

“Sometimes when we have a tragedy like this it could very well strengthen the community,” Ingram said. “I’m liking the resiliency of these people. They didn’t let this deter them.”

Earlier in the week, Harrisburg Mayor Wanda Williams said the heart of the community was taken as the fire tore through the building, taking livelihoods with it. The market was founded in 1860 and is recognized as the longest continuously operating market house in the nation. Harrisburg Fire Chief Brian Enterline ruled the fire accidental, saying it stemmed from a malfunctioning ceiling fan that was installed in 2017. Video from a vendor’s security cameras aided firefighters and investigators in determining the cause.

Market vendors, for the most part, have said they all hold individual insurance policies, some of which cover loss of business as well as equipment.A handful of them are setting up pop-ups in the market’s courtyard in tandem with operating hours at the market’s stone building, which was not damaged in the fire.

Monroy said officials are weighing options to find a temporary location for vendors. Already, the market has A pre-scheduled Christmas in July event is planned from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and will support displaced vendors.
