The Government’s first Investment Zone will support a new research facility in Sheffield that is hoped will reduce the aviation industry’s carbon footprint and generate a £2bn industry.
Today the University of Sheffield confirmed it will be the first area in the country to receive support to further develop ground-breaking aerospace technology. It also means the components – such as parts of the wing and fuselage – are lighter and more aerodynamic making planes more fuel efficient.The process has been achieved thanks to state-of-the-art robot automation which is now able to build to an accuracy of 0.1 milimetres.
