With just hours to go until an 11:59 p.m. Tuesday strike deadline for 3,700 workers at Metro stores in the Greater Toronto Area, representatives for the grocery retailer and Unifor Local 414 are still at the bargaining table.

Unifor national president Lana Payne said in a text message that there had been some progress, but added that it’s “a critical time” in the talks. After negotiating until late Monday night, discussions resumed this morning, Payne said.

Metro also saw sales rise to $4.55 billion in the quarter, a 6.6 per cent rise from the same period a year earlier. “Front-line jobs in the service industry were becoming harder to fill even before the pandemic. And what these workers went through during the pandemic made it even harder,” said Gomez. Sylvain Charlebois, head of the Agri-Food Analytics lab at Dalhousie University, agreed that the battle for public opinion is likely a key factor for Metro.
