Due to higher-than-anticipated demand, Stage 4 load shedding will be implemented from 10:00 on Frday morning until 05:00 on Saturday, Eskom announced on Friday morning.Stage 4 load shedding returns on Wednesday after eight generating units break down
It said demand is expected to increase again heading into the weekend, and urged consumers to conserve power.Load shedding was suspended at 01:35 on Sunday morning after pumped storage dam levels were adequately replenished for the week ahead, Eskom said on Sunday. Consequently, Stage 2 load shedding will be implemented from 08:00 until 16:00 on Sunday, followed by Stage 4 load shedding until 05:00 on Monday.
Breakdowns are currently at 17 679MW of generating capacity while the generating capacity out of service for planned maintenance is 3 090MW. Less than a week after Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa said he was confident that Eskom had enough generating capacity to withstand the cold weather, the power utility announced the implementation of Stage 6 load shedding.
Over the past 24 hours, a generating unit each at Arnot, Matla and Medupi power stations was returned to service. In the same period, a generating unit at Matla and two generating units at Kriel power stations were taken out of service due to breakdowns. The delay in returning to service a generating unit at Kendal and two generating units at Tutuka power stations are contributing to the current capacity constraints.
"Due to high demand and slight reduction in generation capacity, Stage 4 load shedding will be implemented at 13:00 [on Monday] until 05:00 on Tuesday," the utility said in a short statement. Daytime load shedding suspension to continue Load shedding will resume at 16:00 at Stage 3, until midnight, and then suspended from midnight until 16:00 on Sunday.Eskom teams are gearing up for storms expected to batter the Western Cape over the weekend, it said in a statement on Friday afternoon. This follows a weather warning issued by the SA Weather Service to expect heavy rain and severe thunderstorms to make landfall in parts of the province later in the day.
"Breakdowns slightly increased to 15 100 MW of generating capacity while the generating capacity out of service for planned maintenance slightly increased to 5 252MW," Eskom said. Over the pas 24 hours, a generating unit at Arnot returned to service, but a unit at Matimba broke down. There is an ongoing delay returning two generating units at Tutuka power station to service.
Breakdowns have reduced to 14 374 MW of generating capacity, while the capacity out of service for planned maintenance has been boosted to 5 003 MW. Stage 3 load shedding will be implemented from 16:00 until midnight on Wednesday as communicated earlier, Eskom said in an updated statement.Stage 1 load shedding will then be implemented from 05:00 until 16:00, followed by Stage 3 load shedding until midnight. This pattern will be repeated on Friday.
