Santam experienced a 35% increase in plumbing claims for the Gauteng area during the period of the shutdown.South Africa's biggest short-term insurer, Santam, says it experienced a significant jump in plumbing claims from clients in the Gauteng area during the water shutdown in Johannesburg last week. Those are just the claims for the few days of the official shutdown to allow Rand Water to maintain the city's water infrastructure.
Some areas in Johannesburg were still without water for a few days after the shutdown ended, although the flow has now returned to normal in most areas. "We experienced a 35% increase in plumbing claims for the Gauteng area during the period of the shutdown. We can't, however, extract granular stats as to what was solely attributable to the water shutdown or due to the cold weather," said Santam in response to News24's questions.Get 14 days free to read all our investigative and in-depth journalism.
