We moved to a remote Texas town in our early 20s to jumpstart our careers. We found a robust, young town we loved so much we plan to stay permanently.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Avery Boydston, 25, and her husband Bayler, 26, about their decision to move to Midland, Texas, and the new life they have built. The conversation has been edited for length and clarity. My husband and I are from Amarillo, Texas. We graduated from high school in 2015 and 2016 and moved to Lubbock to attend Texas Tech University.

This year makes a little over four years of us both living in the city. Once you get here, it's too hard to leave.Courtesy of Avery Boydston. When we first moved to Midland, we lived in a one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment that we were paying $1,100 each month for in rent. We eventually moved to a nicer complex and rented a similar unit that cost $1,800 each month.

Many of the city's schools are full and there is a shortage of teachers. The school district is innovative and working on new ways to address the issue and provide students with more resources. The city is also trying to improve its economy by bringing in more businesses like high-end gyms, restaurants, and coffee shops.

While living here, I've been able to pursue a career in teaching. I now work as a seventh grade teacher at a private school. Bayler's salary is growing each year and we have expanded our savings by thousands of dollars.
