Natural gas is generally considered safer as it is lighter than air and tends to evaporate in case of a leak.A devastating gas explosion tore through Bree Street in downtown Johannesburg on Wednesday afternoon, leaving several injured and one fatality.

The officials from Rompco explained that accidental gas leakages can lead to explosions if the gas/air mixture falls within specific flammable limits. Fortunately, enhanced safety protocols, advanced technology, and stringent laws have made gas leak explosions relatively uncommon nowadays.The underground gas pipeline network in Johannesburg spans approximately 1 200 kilometres, is owned by Egoli Gas and is regulated by the City of Joburg bylaws.
