After in-home water use, watering lawns is the next biggest use of water, according to Metro Vancouver’s water committee, and water use in general is up 20 per cent over a year ago, the regional district says.
It has forced lawn-maintenance companies to cut staff and offer alternative yard services that don’t involve watering vegetation. A landscape crew from Seymour Lawn Maintenance works in a North Vancouver yard. Due to the recent drought, the company has had to pivot away from lawn maintenance and has laid-off several workers.“This is the driest year I’ve ever seen,” said Ryan Wiebe, who started his North Vancouver company Seymour Lawn Maintenance in 2001 as a 21-year-old.
“ might be the new norm, maybe,” he said. “It’s really hard to say. I’ve seen us get rain as early as late August or early September, and some years not.“I feel people don’t really kind of understand what I’m doing yet, but the transformation is unbelievable where you have this dormant brown grass,” said Tyler Basham, a fireman who set up a grass-paint company called“I come in and paint the grass, we can customize the shade of green you get.
