I would have thought the idiots doing drugs at the Festivals were to blame for the crackdown...or am I wrong? And what about the promoters turning a blind eye in the first place? No let's just blame the Govt, much easier than addressing the actual problem.

Correct. There's no reason for Police & police sniffer dogs to police people for personal possession or use of MDMA. Drug/Pill testing reduces risks & harms just like what's afforded to food & alcohol. Politicians policy is the problem & they're causing more harm than events.

Or would that be the drug taking industry?
