'Large chains like the proposed Kroger-Albertsons conglomerate could monopolize entire regions of Arizona, then raise prices, close store fronts, and eliminate jobs.”

TUCSON, Ariz. — U.S. Rep. Ruben Gallego sent a letter to the Federal Trade Commission Tuesday opposing Kroger Company’s acquisition of Albertsons Companies, Inc.

Gallego points out in the letter that there is a 25-mile stretch of Cochise County with no supermarkets at all. For those cities and towns with their own Fry's or Safeway, the stores play several essential roles. “If the FTC requires concessions from Kroger, those unknowns are too great,” Budge said. “Bigger is not always better, especially in rural Southern Arizona.”
