Young people are being put off by their parents who remember the last recession when many construction workers lost their jobs, study finds

A Department of Further and Higher Education plan to boost the numbers entering construction has concluded that the industry suffers from perceptions that it is boom and bust and that the industry is solely on-site.

The department survey said many parents were not familiar with advances in the sector where much more work is done off-site and technological advances mean workers can continue to operate in the sector without having to do heavy manual labour. He said the Careers in Construction action plan shows there are many career opportunities within the sector.

“We have been quite successful in doing that, but we need to do it in an organised and a joined-up manner,” he said. “This report sets out 20 actions in total to achieve that to try and promote careers and career paths in construction design and management.”
