Saints Row reboot studio Volition has been shut down effective immediately according to a statement posted through the game development company’s official LinkedIn page.
This decision comes merely a year after Embracer Group had acquired several high-profile studios including , whose portfolios contained a handful of classic games that included entries in the Tomb Raider and Legacy of Kain series’.: “This past June, Embracer Group announced a restructuring program to strengthen Embracer and maintain its position as a leader in the video game industry. As part of that program, they evaluated strategic and operational goals and made the difficult decision to close Volition effective immediately.
As soon as news of Volition’s shuttering broke, fans immediately started coming out in droves to support the beloved video game development company. And with the studio having produced several beloved RPG and shoot ’em up games like Summoner and Red Faction, most were predictably incensed at Embracer Group’s decision.
Alas, Volition isn’t the first casualty of Embracer Group’s ruthless restructuring process as the video game holding company also recently shuttered Campfire Cabal, the studio responsible for creating the tactical RPG series, Expeditions: Rome. Unfortunately, this may not be the last studio that gets shuttered by Embracer Group as the corporation is undoubtedly still reeling from the effects of the failed $2 billion partnership mega-deal that fell through back in June 2023.
