A&C Bus Corp. was faced with about $1 million in insurance costs that it was unable to pay for, causing it to shut down by this October.

The No. 32 bus is seen on Danforth Avenue by Route 440 in Jersey City on Tuesday, July 25, 2023. A private Jersey City bus company was dealt a 1-2 death punch by ridership decreases from the pandemic and rising insurance costs, the company claimed in documents submitted to the state officially announcing it will shut down by the end of October.

The A&C Bus Corp., which operates four routes through the West Side section of the city, submitted a 36-page “Petition ... to Discontinue Regular Route Service” to the state Motor Vehicle Commission last month. The petition, complete with exhibits, is technically a request for “permission” to halt service, but make no mistake, A&C officials said, service will stop whether permission is granted or not.
