The City of Tucson is considering limiting hours for new shops and limiting the amount of space current shops can expand to.

TUCSON, Ariz. — Cashing out a customer, Jason Arnold, the manager of Astro Smoke Shop on Golf Links and Harrison, counted out change.

“Being open 24-hours allows us to serve the people of the community that keep night time hours. There’s a lot of people that work overnights,” Arnold said.If the City limits new shops’ hours, Arnold said it could also affect workers. The City’s Planning and Development Services department said smoke shops that are already open would only be able to expand their floor area by up to 50 percent. After that they would need special approval.

“It deters from building a better community if you have the same type of business every 3 buildings or whatever,” Arnold said.
