CarbonRun tests acidity in waterways, then adds natural salts to restore river habitats damaged by acid rain and pollution. - ContributedSaltWire's Atlantic regional weather forecast for September 19, 2023 | SaltWireCarbonRun, the Halifax company that works to restore rivers damaged by pollution, has secured US$500,000 from Frontier, a fund that pays companies to remove carbon.

CarbonRun works to both restore freshwater ecosystem health and reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide. It and another Halifax company, Planetary, are two of the three Canadian firms among the 30 projects sponsored by Frontier worldwide.“We are a river water restoration company, so we are working on acid rain mitigation,” Sterling said. “We’ve been looking at the water chemistry since 2010, seeing toxic levels of aluminum, and that the calcium is below the levels needed to support aquatic life.

The money CarbonRun is receiving from Frontier, which will create about 10 jobs, isn’t for a piece of the company; rather it’s a “pre-purchase” to have a certain amount of carbon removed, in this case 1,291 tons.
