U.S. first-time unemployment claims climb in late February

The numbers: The number of people who applied for unemployment benefits in late February rose modestly but remained near the lowest level in decades, suggesting the labor market is still rock solid.

The four-week average of new jobless claims, meanwhile, dipped by 7,000 to 229,000 a week after hitting a 13-month high. The monthly average is viewed as more stable since it smoothens out the weekly gyrations.
