High rollers are leaving Macau but tourists are streaming in. That’s making an unlucky start to the year for the gambling hub not so bad after all.
Gross gambling revenue in the semiautonomous Chinese city—the only place in the country where casinos are allowed—dropped 0.5% year-over-year in the first two months, a sharp deceleration from 14% growth for the whole of 2018. The slowdown has been going on for a while, mainly because VIP gamblers have been placing fewer bets in Macau casinos as the Chinese economy slows.
Maybe the “high rollers” saw the summit and went to their bunkers.
