The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union president Joseph Mathunjwa has called for punitive measures in response to deaths at mines.

JOHANNESBURG - Mineral Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe said criminal charges against mining companies due to fatalities will likely cripple the already strained industry. The department sad while strong action needs to be taken, prosecuting mining companies is not the answer

Spokesperson David Msiza said: “He has appreciated the comments that were made regarding the strengthening of the law. The miners and colleagues in the sector still feel that there is a lot of strengthening that needs to be done. We need to collaborate with the state, business and organised labour to check where we can strengthen.”

If we not prosecuting them then let miners own 40% of the company directly

Wow, meaning that loss of life means nothing. Cry my beloved country

Am very disappointed in Gwede

South Africa produces more platinum and similar metals than any other nation and produces billions in revenues. Wales' cities were built from from coal mines. Go to the North West and compare. Maybe Jo'burg or the Cape have benefited but mines have proven to be useless.

maggsnaidu

You want to let them go free mantashe, what kind of a leader are you?

Dear Gwede, When your soul has been sold to the devil you start preaching demonic gospel.

Reckless statement 😔😔

We don't need mine's in SA look what it has done in eastrand (Nigel -boksburg )communities along this towns are poor

People are dying bcos of poor safety measures (if present)...and u as a minister u worried about crippling industry ....u are showing yourself to be captured ....

WTF?

Don’t believe a word that comes out of its mouth

Mantashe. Biggest skellem ever. Stay low. Deny. Deny. Deny

The west taught us that slaves/workers have no rights and our black leadership continue to demonstrate their clear understanding of that lesson. What a shame now that they are the ones spreading such miseducation.

Im more convinced that old age home is the best place for all anc ministers

So it’s better to kill the multitudes. I think politicians just don’t care about anyone but their own families 😰

These ANC ThumaMina Sellouts must be voted out. We are seriously lead by fools. GwedeMantashe1 must vacate that office. He is counter revolutionary.

So according to this man ppl must die n no one must take responsibility. Mxm

Thats the ANC for u!

This sellout is protecting mining companies.

Ohyes, these people don't care for none except themselves

So by that standard, not only mining companies should be held liable, what about other industries, Road freight etc?

Really wow!!!

Because most accidents are self inflicted by employees.

So?

As long as the industry is fine and shareholders are making money, who cares about workers lives lost?

Or take your son to the mine and work there and say what you say

So life is less important
