On Tuesday, Mr Sunak continued to refuse to deny that he is about to cancel the northern leg of HS2, insisting that he will not be forced into any “premature decisions”.

Mr Reynolds warned that scrapping the Manchester leg would impact future decisions on whether companies like his take on UK Government projects. “All the things that are coming forward were done on the basis that it’s the King’s Cross of the North — now what do we get? We get nothing instead.”
