Intuitive Machines prepares to take NASA and commercial experiments to the South Pole of the moon on the first launch of its Nova-C lander. The company’s six-day launch window from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center opens Nov. 15.But first, the lander must survive a 1,000-mile trek to the Kennedy Space Center.
Martin’s dad, Jack Martin, previously worked in the trucking business and handled much of these logistics. “I wanted to do projects that I could see completed and see executed,” said Crain, the company’s chief technology officer. “I left NASA because we weren’t landing on the moon, so there’s some irony there.”Intuitive Machines was a think tank in its early days, striving to take the engineering practices of human spaceflight and apply them to industries including energy, health care and aerospace.that could take both NASA and commercial payloads to the lunar surface.
A soft landing would make Intuitive Machines the first commercial company to land on the moon. Japanese company ispace attempted this in April but crashed into the surface. Intuitive Machines is also poised to be the first U.S. spacecraft to land softly on the moon since Apollo 17 in 1972. India and China have more recently completed their own soft landings.
