On Wednesday morning, a cash-in-transit van was travelling on Malendela Road in KwaMashu in KwaZulu-Natal when it was attacked by a group of people travelling in at least two vehicles, police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said.
A video circulating on social media, reportedly of the CIT heist, shows an explosion that causes an armoured vehicle's door to fly several metres into the air before landing in an open field alongside the road. A bakkie and sedan can be seen parked next to the vehicle, and five people run up to the vehicle after the explosion.
The robbery comes only a day after a security guard was killed during a CIT heist on Tuesday morning in Folweni, in the same province. Another was shot in the head and wounded.Netshiunda said the van was travelling along the M35 Road when it came under heavy gunfire from a group of people in a white double-cab bakkie.
On Monday, two people were killed in a CIT heist in Tsolo in the Eastern Cape – one of them a driver caught in the crossfire between security guards and robbers."The G4s security guards were transporting money when their vehicle was suddenly blocked by two vehicles, a white Toyota Fortuner and a white double-cab bakkie," she said.
