Thursday, Oct. 5: A reader decries the move from one company to another for the federal bureaucracy.

I could not agree more with Iris Winston about Canada Life Assurance. My question is: who is the “genius” who thought of switching from a very efficient and prompt company such as Sun Life to a company that is more like the Phoenix pay system? This person must have realized that Phoenix was lonely and so thought of creating a partner to it.

Canada compares very poorly with most of our NATO allies: our ranking has plunged to 25th in terms of contributions to NATO defence. The most important part of the prime minister’s mandate is to ensure the safety and security of all Canadians. The military should be considered an essential service and have its own separate and dedicated budget and not be included in the smoke and mirrors of program cuts. Our current military operational readiness and capability cannot even defend Canada, let alone contribute to NATO or NORAD.

Let’s put up a sign: “Pedestrians, Cyclists and Fire Trucks ONLY!” It could then work all year-round.
