Delta Air Lines beat expectations for third-quarter results on Thursday as the carrier kicked off earnings season for the “big four” U.S. airlines.
Both will be in sharp focus when analysts—and shareholders—break down the numbers, the first from the four major U.S. carriers. Related to fuel costs is a trend that has hit food stocks but could be a boon to the airlines over time: weight-loss drugs. Airlines spend billions of dollars a year on fuel—with the amount spent linked to plane payload; the likes of Ozempic and Wegovy, made by Novo Nordisk , could cut those costs.
That would translate to some 20 cents of annual earnings per share, according to Kahyaoglu, and while the example is for United “this benefit should be recognized similarly across airlines,” the Jefferies analysts said.
