All 157 people on board an Ethiopian Airlines flight died after the plane went down shortly after takeoff on Sunday morning. It follows a Lion Air flight that went down in late October, killing all 189 people on board. Both the Ethiopian Airlines and Lion Air flights were brand-new Boeing 737 MAX 8 planes. And both crashed minutes into flight. The circumstances of both crashes remain under investigation, and Boeing has presented no evidence to suggest the two incidents are linked.
American Airlines and United also fly the MAX 8. Delta does not fly any 737 MAX variants.Although it's"way too soon to know anything about this crash," Aboulafia said that is unlikely to hurt Boeing's bottom line too much. "Relative to the company's revenue base, this would not be overly burdensome by any means," he said.

Ultimately the Boeing 737 (any variation) is a 1950’s based design. Boeing are trying to save money by constantly adding new tech, more efficient engines, etc - avoiding the need for costly new type certification. Profit before people - and Boeing are not the only one!
Wouldn't normal procedure/instinct be to switch off any automation influencing the aircraft and take control? Obviously whatever happened must have been major but just wondering why pilots didn't 'manually' fly plane.

It’s a serious software problem. AI will not disengage and allow the pilot to fly the plane. The one after lion that didn’t crash got lucky. But, one wonders, most of these planes are in US why no reported problems here?

Pilots need to be aware that if something goes wrong with autopilot, they need to shut it off. (may or may not be case here) In situation in which seconds matter, & there will be panic, pilots need to be trained to recognize what needs to be done. New 737 requires more training.
