Ireland's first gaming industry conference - Nexus - takes place in Dublin today.

Nexus aims to bring together developers, publishers, investors and others in the industry to discuss the current opportunities in the sector here, and its potential for growth.

"What a lot of people don't realise is that the global games industry is worth more than the movie and music industries combined. It's a huge opportunity over the next five, 10, 20 years to drive significant economic growth and job creation," he said. Mr Dempsey said growing the sector here will be about getting more big studios to make games here - while also supporting indigenous developers to grow.

"So I think it's going to be a combination of both - but the potential is huge. We see the talent and the passion that's within the gaming industry here." But Mr Dempsey argues that Ireland has a proven track record of drawing in big businesses, which it can build on in the world of gaming. In Budget 2022 the Government introduced a tax credit for games development, which has proven helpful to the sector.
