The daughter of Olympic gold medallist Mary Lou Retton has revealed that her mother suffered a “scary setback” in her battle with a rare form of pneumonia. Retton has been in ICU since losing the ability to breathe autonomously earlier this month and had looked to have turned a corner in a positive direction. But the 55-year-old American took a turn for the worse this week, as her daughter Shayla Kelley Schrepfer explained.
“Mom’s progress is truly remarkable! Prayers have been felt and have been answered,” they wrote. “Although she remains in the ICU, her path to recovery is steadily unfolding. Her fighting spirit is truly shining!” “Her breathing is becoming stronger, and her reliance on machines is diminishing. “Though it’s a lengthy journey, witnessing these improvements is incredibly heartening. She’s responding so well to treatments.
