Don't think of your primary residence as an investment like an index fund or a 401(k), says Douglas Boneparth, co-author of 'The Millennial Money Fix.'

A home is simply "a roof over your head" and a place to create memories, said Douglas Boneparth, certified financial planner and co-author of "The Millennial Money Fix," in an interview with CNBC's Frank Holland

Instead, it's a "home base" that provides stability, especially for young families. A home can have sentimental value too, but otherwise it's "very tough to calculate the return on your investment," he said.
