A body has been found in a croc-infested Queensland river after a man went missing while running from police. A 36-year-old man disappeared on Thursday about 6pm after he went underwater in the Fitzroy River in Rockhampton. Officers who were chasing him saw him jump into the river, according to Chief Inspector Mark Burgess. When they reached the riverbank, they “tried to verbally negotiate with the missing person to return to the bank, certainly for his own safety”, Burgess said on Friday.
“My understanding is that he’s yelled out ‘help’, or words of that similar nature, and has gone underwater. That would indicate some type of distress or some type of event.” Police said in a statement on Sunday a body had been located by a member of the public around 11pm on Saturday following a search and rescue operation to find the missing 36-year-old Kawana man.
