Ford's new Ranger pickup has a lot of rivals in the midsize truck market—just how does it compare to the Colorado, Tacoma and Gladiator? The rundown, from drivingdotca:

Full-size pickup trucks are forever getting bigger, and that’s opened a whole new market for midsize haulers. Some of them never went away, but a few were discontinued and now have returned, including the 2019 Ford Ranger.

Meanwhile, here’s everything else you can get in this midsize pickup market. Keep in mind towing and payload numbers are the top capacities for each truck’s lineup overall; some models within that lineup may be lower. Base prices are also all over the map, depending on what configurations each automaker offers as its entry-level model.

The four-cylinder tops out at 3,500-pound towing capacity, while the V6 can pull up to 7,000 pounds. Get the diesel and you’ve got the highest towing in the segment at 7,700 pounds. Payload goes as high as 1,574 pounds. Toyota Tacoma The “Taco” is the longest-running nameplate in the segment, launched in 1995 , so Toyota must be doing something right. It’s getting a refresh for 2020, but the mechanicals will remain the same. For 2019, prices start at $31,825.

The Tacoma hits its highest off-road chops with the TRD Pro, starting at $53,170. That adds front and rear Fox shocks, a stainless steel exhaust system, underbody protection and a wicked-looking, snorkel-style exterior air intake. The Honda Ridgeline is the only one in this segment with a unibody — it’s more of an SUV with a 5.3-foot bed — but for many buyers, it’s more than enough truck. Pricing starts at $40,790 and for that, you get four full-size doors, all-wheel drive and a 3.5L V6 that makes 280 horsepower and 262 lb.-ft. of torque, paired to a six-speed automatic.
