An engineering firm is awarded a £93m contract to build the new Cambridge South station.

Engineering company J Murphy & Sons Ltd has been awarded the £93.4m contract for the station on Francis Crick Avenue at the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

It will consist of two storeys and four platforms and serve the West Anglia Main Line, with an expected 1.8 million passengers per year. The station will include ticket vending machines, lifts providing step-free access to all platforms, retails space and access for pedestrians and cyclists, with capacity for 1,000 cycle parking spaces.

Modifications to roads and crossings will be needed to facilitate access to the station, Network Rail said. Initial work on the rail infrastructure to support the new station began in spring, and the railway station is expected to be opened in 2025.
