A body believed to be that of missing camper Jessica Louise Stephens has been found by police in the Northern Territory. Stephens, 35, had travelled to Kakadu National Park on October 17 to go camping and had not been heard from since. Northern Territory Police said in a statement on Saturday afternoon that they had recovered human remains believed to be those of the missing woman earlier in the day. The remains were found on Nourlangie Rock near where Stephens was believed to be travelling.
Police confirmed the remains were located within the original search area. On Thursday, personal items believed to belong to Stephens were located “a considerable distance from the walking track in harsh terrain”, NT Police said in an earlier statement. Extreme heat had hampered search efforts, with temperatures in the area reaching 41C. A large search and rescue operation had been ongoing since 24 October 2023.
