An aged care provider attempted to "blackmail" the family of a woman who had to go to hospital during a period of respite care, saying it would not take her back unless the family committed her to a permanent place.
The average waiting time for home care is 22 months, with more than 128,000 people waiting for home care or receiving a package of care inappropriate for their needs. Council on the Ageing chief executive Ian Yates earlier told the inquiry at least 30,000 packages would be required to ensure that nobody waited longer than three months, which would cost several billion dollars.
Lynda Henderson told the inquiry she was still recovering from the six months she spent waiting for a home care package for her partner, Veda Meneghetti, who was suffering from panic attacks and anxiety as a symptom of her Alzheimer's and barely slept overnight.
