The closing of the state road, just north of the St. Mary Medical Center and Joan Martin Elementary, has sent confused motorists onto Hobart side streets creating unexpected traffic. Recently, a resident walking her dog suffered a shoulder injury when she was struck by a pickup truck driver who ignored the stop sign at 12th and Lincoln streets. Also, a motorist struck and killed a puppy near the same intersection, according to a social media post.
A large sign indicating the business is open is posted on the road at its curve by the elementary. “We had to ask for that,” said Budzielek. She said the business was told the road wouldn’t reopen until December. An Indiana Department of Transportation spokeswoman said it could be done by Nov. 24. “It’s exhausting,” said Budzielek. “We’re frustrated, but at the same time, what can we do?” Sapper’s, established in 1943, is one of Hobart’s oldest businesses.
