Sri Lanka veteran Angelo Mathews has become the first player in the history of international cricket to be ‘timed out’ during a drama-filled Cricket World Cup match against rivals Bangladesh. Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan triggered a global cricket debate on the spirit of cricket when he successfully appealed to have Mathews ‘timed out’ without facing a ball at a crucial stage of the match.

Shakib went on to smash a rapid 82 in their three-wicket victory over Sri Lanka, who were eliminated from the tournament as a result of the loss. “It is obviously disgraceful from Shakib and Bangladesh,” said Mathews afterwards. “If they want to play cricket like that and stoop down to that level, there’s something wrong, drastically. Up to today I had the utmost respect for him and the Bangladesh team.
